I used enamel paint, but lacquer also works well: Some lacquer thinner is poured into a shallow container, an old hubcap works well. You only need enough to fully submerge the belt. Put the belts in a pillow case and wash them just like a pair of old jeans. Use Rit dye, follow all of the instructions and don't leave out the salt. Dye them in a pan on top of the stove.
